Ram 1500 360 Camera

How to Use the Ram 1500 360° Surround View Camera

Learn how to use the Ram 1500 360° Surround View Camera, change camera views and troubleshoot visibility problems.

The available Ram 1500 360° Surround View Camera combines images from cameras positioned around the truck to display a top-down view of the surrounding area. It can help drivers judge nearby obstacles when parking, navigating tight spaces or positioning the truck near a trailer.

The system is available on select Ram 1500 trims and equipment packages, including certain Big Horn, Sport, Rebel, Laramie, Limited Longhorn, Limited, RHO and Tungsten configurations. Around Kenora and Northwestern Ontario, the additional visibility can be useful when backing into a campsite, parking near a boat launch or manoeuvring through a crowded lot.

To learn more about the truck’s touchscreen and vehicle controls, read our Ram 1500 Uconnect system guide.

Camera availability, activation methods, screen layouts and selectable views vary by Ram 1500 trim, model year, equipment package and Uconnect system. Confirm the equipment installed on your truck and consult the owner’s manual for vehicle-specific instructions.

How to Use the Ram 1500 Surround View Camera While Reversing

Step 1: Check the Area Around the Truck

Before moving, walk around the Ram 1500 when practical and look for people, vehicles, posts, curbs or other obstacles. The camera system improves visibility but cannot display every object or hazard.

Step 2: Start the Truck

Start the engine and allow the Uconnect touchscreen to load. Make sure the screen is clean and bright enough to view clearly.

Step 3: Shift into Reverse

With your foot on the brake, shift the truck into Reverse. On an equipped Ram 1500, the rear camera image and available top-down view should appear on the Uconnect touchscreen.

The display may include parking guidelines to help show the truck’s projected path. These lines may move as the steering wheel turns.

Step 4: Review the Top-Down View

Look at the bird’s-eye image to judge the space around the truck. Pay particular attention to the sides of the vehicle, where curbs, parking lines and nearby objects may be difficult to see from the driver’s seat.

The top-down image is created by combining multiple camera feeds. Objects near the edges of the image may look curved, stretched or closer than expected.

Step 5: Check the Rear Camera View

Use the rear-facing image to confirm what is directly behind the truck. Continue checking the mirrors and looking over your shoulder rather than relying only on the screen.

Step 6: Reverse Slowly

Release the brake gradually and move at a slow, controlled speed. Stop immediately when the view is unclear or an object appears too close.

How to Activate the Cameras Without Reversing

Step 1: Stop or Drive at a Very Low Speed

Manually activate the camera system only when the truck is stationary or travelling slowly enough for the feature to operate. Camera displays may automatically close when the vehicle exceeds the permitted operating speed.

Step 2: Open the Vehicle Controls

Use the Uconnect touchscreen to open the vehicle controls or camera functions. The exact menu name and button location vary between systems.

Step 3: Select the Surround View Camera

Choose the available surround-view or camera option. The display may open with a top-down image beside a front or rear view.

Step 4: Select the Needed View

Depending on the truck’s equipment, the system may offer several views, such as:

  • Top-down surround view
  • Front camera view
  • Rear camera view
  • Front or rear split view
  • Side views
  • Rear zoom view
  • Cargo or trailer-related views

Select the view that gives you the clearest perspective for the manoeuvre.

Step 5: Close the Camera Display

Select the on-screen close command or return to the previous Uconnect screen. The display may also close automatically when the truck reaches a certain speed or changes operating conditions.

Before You Start

  • Confirm that the Ram 1500 is equipped with the 360° Surround View Camera.
  • Walk around the truck before reversing whenever practical.
  • Clean the front, rear and exterior-mirror camera lenses.
  • Adjust the screen brightness so the image is clearly visible.
  • Fold out the exterior mirrors before using the surround-view display.
  • Remove snow, ice, mud and road salt from the camera areas.
  • Do not use the camera image as a replacement for mirrors or direct observation.
  • During winter in Kenora, Ontario, check the lenses after driving on slushy or salt-covered roads because a small amount of buildup can significantly reduce image quality.

Benefits of the Ram 1500 360° Surround View Camera

The available camera system can assist with several everyday driving tasks:

  • Seeing the area immediately around the truck
  • Positioning the Ram 1500 within parking lines
  • Navigating narrow driveways and garage entrances
  • Checking the distance from curbs and nearby vehicles
  • Backing into campsites and confined spaces
  • Approaching a boat launch or trailer area
  • Aligning the truck near a trailer hitch
  • Viewing obstacles that may be difficult to see from the driver’s seat
  • Selecting different camera angles for specific manoeuvres

The system is a parking and visibility aid. The driver remains responsible for checking the surroundings and controlling the truck safely.

Troubleshooting Common Camera Issues

  • The surround-view option does not appear: The Ram 1500 may have a rear backup camera without the complete 360° system. Check the window sticker or vehicle equipment information.
  • One part of the image is black or unclear: A camera lens may be covered by dirt, snow, ice, water or road salt. Inspect and gently clean each camera area.
  • The top-down image looks distorted: Some distortion is normal because the system combines images from several wide-angle cameras. Use the image for general positioning rather than precise distance measurement.
  • The parking guidelines do not move: Dynamic guidelines may depend on the selected view, system settings and truck equipment. Confirm that the steering wheel is turning and check the available camera settings.
  • The camera display closes automatically: The system may close when the truck reaches a certain speed, shifts into another gear or exceeds its permitted operating conditions.

If the screen remains blank, a camera repeatedly loses its image or the displayed views appear misaligned, schedule an inspection with the Kenora Chrysler Service Centre in Kenora, Ontario.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every Ram 1500 have a 360° Surround View Camera?

No. A rear backup camera may be standard or commonly equipped, but the complete 360° Surround View Camera is available only on select trims, packages and configurations.

How do I turn on the Ram 1500 360° camera?

On equipped trucks, the system normally activates when the truck shifts into Reverse. It may also be opened manually through the camera or vehicle controls on the Uconnect touchscreen.

What does the bird’s-eye view show?

The bird’s-eye display combines images from cameras around the truck to create an overhead representation of the nearby area. It can help show parking lines, curbs and obstacles beside the vehicle.

Can I use the surround-view camera while driving forward?

The camera may be manually displayed while the truck is stopped or moving at a low speed. It will generally close when the vehicle exceeds the system’s permitted operating speed.

Can the camera help when connecting a trailer?

The rear camera and available zoom or trailer-related views can help position the truck near a trailer coupler. Always leave the truck, inspect the alignment directly and follow proper hitching procedures before towing.

Why is my Ram 1500 camera blurry during winter?

Snow, frost, road salt and moisture can cover the small exterior camera lenses. During winter driving around Kenora and Northwestern Ontario, inspect and clean the lenses regularly using a soft cloth that will not scratch them.

Does the camera detect every nearby object?

No. The cameras can have blind areas, and image distortion may affect how objects appear. Always check the mirrors, look around the truck and move slowly.
